WHO WE ARE

Community – Celebrating Culture, Heritage, and Togetherness

The Townsville Tamil Community (TTC) is a registered non profit organisation that was established in 2015 by a small group of dedicated Tamils living in Townsville, who recognized the importance of creating an association that could bring Tamils together to celebrate, cherish, and preserve their rich culture and heritage. They envisioned not only a platform to unite Tamils in North Queensland but also a space where younger generations could connect with and carry forward their ancestral traditions.

This initiative was led by Dr. Sivagnanam Agilan, Dr. Amuthanila Kasianandan and Dr Karthikeyan Velusamy, who joined the Townsville Hospital during the period of 2007-2008, alongside other committed community members. Through their leadership and vision, TTC began its journey of community building.

Since its inception, the organization has hosted numerous cultural celebrations, festivals, and sports events, all designed to foster unity, strengthen cultural identity, and encourage active participation among families and youth.

Who Are the Tamils?

The Tamils are a global community with an extraordinary history that stretches back thousands of years. They are speakers of Tamil, the oldest language in use, still thriving today in both spoken and written form. Tamil is recognized for its literary heritage and cultural richness, and it continues to flourish across the globe.

Traditionally, Tamils originate from southern India and Sri Lanka, but vibrant Tamil populations also exist in Singapore, Malaysia, Mauritius, South Africa, and, in more recent decades, across Europe, North America, Canada, and Australia.

In recognition of its value, Tamil has been acknowledged internationally. Australia Parliament declaring January as ‘Tamil Heritage Month’ in 2025 affirming the importance of Tamil identity in multicultural societies.

The photo shown here captures the celebration of Pongal during the Tamils Heritage month of January in Townsville, where families gathered to thank Sun for supporting lives in the earth and honor tradition, share food, and pass on cultural values to their children.

The Tamil Community in Townsville

Today, Townsville is home to around 40–50 Tamil families, many of whom contribute to the wider community through diverse professions, with a particularly strong presence in the health sector. This includes university students who have relocated from regions outside Townsville and even from overseas to be a part of the THHS community.

Looking Forward

What began as the vision of a few community-minded individuals in 2015 has grown into a thriving association that continues to promote Tamil identity and heritage in Townsville. The TTC remains committed to its founding mission: to unite, celebrate, and nurture the cultural roots of the Tamil community while building strong bridges with the broader multicultural society of Townsville.
